Gulf Hotspot Navigation Map

The Gulf of Mexico Scenic Highway along with sound protection and management of the Gulf's eco-systems would be a part of a Multiple Lines of Defense Strategy against the loss of wetlands and the devastation caused by hurricanes.
See Comprehensive Recommendations to Sustain Coastal Louisiana

The envisioned Gulf of Mexico Scenic Highway is the network of pre-existing roads and highways that most closely hug the Gulf of Mexico and starts in Key West, Florida. USA  and ends Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico. The proposed Scenic Highway will incorporate all or parts of preexisting local, regional, State and National Scenic Highways starting on the Florida Keys Scenic Highway in Florida and then traveling around the Gulf coast through Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana Texas and finally the Texas Tropical Trail into Mexico.

In Mexico, the Gulf Scenic Highway starts in Matamoros across the Border from  Brownsville, Texas where Hwy 77 crosses into Mexico. Form Matamoros the Gulf Scenic Highway heads south on Highway 180 all the way to Cancun through Soto de Marina, Tampico, Poza Rica, Veracruz, Coatzacoalcos, Cd. del Carmen, Campeche, and Merida. The Gulf Scenic Highway connects in Cancun with Hwy 307 which follows the Caribbean coast to Chetumal, the end/start of the Scenic Highway on the Border of Belize.

The symbolic mile marker zero was laid in Saint Petersburg in November of 2002 in the spot where the first know European landed in the US by Representatives of the Governors of the 11 Gulf of Mexico US and Mexican states under the auspices of the Accord of the States of the Gulf of Mexico (GOMSA). Unfortunately Hurricane Katrina has suspended their work for unknown duration.

Our organization needs all interested individuals; Government agencies - Federal, State; and local, Corporations - profit and non-profit; and anyone else that has an interest in the Gulf of Mexico to support this cause by contacting your State Byway Coordinator and helping us to network together all interested parties and get the Gulf Of Mexico Scenic Highway labeled and promoted. We believe that the Gulf of Mexico Scenic Highway will be of great value in promoting Mexico-US relations and a great tool help to develop sustainable economic development and preserve what's left the the Gulf's wetlands, barrier islands, eco-systems and inland forests around the entire Gulf of Mexico
