The Gulf of Mexico is our Mediterranean sea

It is often neglected but it is a remarkable sea bordering Five US States, Six Mexican States, and Cuba. And all are tied together by the Gulf of Mexico

Full of sea life, wetlands, coral reefs and an amazing coastline with an extraordinary variety of landscapes, from the Keys through the Mississippi delta to the Texas/Mexican barrier islands and then into Mexico's volcanic headlands and the Lands of the Olmec and the Maya. And Old Havana, the Spanish entry way into the Americas, just 90 miles across the Florida straits from the Keys.

The Proposed Scenic Highway would connect the Gulf together utilizing the existing roads and National and State Scenic Byways.

This would help encourage people from throughout the world to explore Gulf's many eco-systems, national wildlife refuges, State and National Parks, Historical and Archaeological sites from the Florida Keys to the Mayan Riviera tied together like a string of pearls (See Gulf Protected Areas Matrix Page)

It is our solemn duty to preserve for future generations the incredible diverse heritage and beauty of the Gulf of Mexico, And to protect what little remains with sound stewardship and a sustainable model that includes sound and safe use of the natural resources of the Gulf of Mexico.

Only through education and a real appreciation of our Gulf of Mexico
will we be able to preserve it for future generations in a holistic way.

Existing Gulf Byways that need to be linked together
Please contact your state or the Federal Byway Coordinator

Help preserve the wetlands, barrier islands, mangroves, inland forests, cypress swaps, rainforests, pine and hardwood forests, etc.
and the environment of the Gulf of Mexico region

As recent Hurricanes and the oil spill demonstrates,
WE ALL DEPEND ON THE GULF OF MEXICO

For the Gulf's oil and natural gas,
the warming waters of the Gulf Stream,
it's abundant natural resources and
the Gulf's Great Cities and unique cultures,
like the badly damaged City of New Orleans,
and Galveston Island.

Soon the oil will stop gushing into the Gulf and the beaches will slowly recover just like what happened after Ixtoc I, an even larger Gulf of Mexico oil disaster in 1979. Let us resist letting this disaster fade from our memories when the event resides from the spotlight and the current media frenzy. Instead let us redouble our effort to protect what's left of the Clean Gulf Waters, it's wetlands, wildlife, and inland Gulf Forests.

Let's work together to rebuild an even more prosperous and united Gulf region under the banner of new commitment and dedication help our Gulf.

The Gulf of Mexico is our national treasure
Please preserve it!
